For the first time ever, I need to ‘shout out’ a ‘thank you’ to someone totally uninvolved with Traveller.
At the end of May, I ‘discovered’, the hard way, that while laptop users may like «soda name redacted», laptop computers do not. I took the now-dead laptop that had been the main computer for working on Freelance Traveller to my local Micro Center store, in hopes that they would be able to recover—at the very least—my user files, so that I could at least finish scratching together this issue.
Their tech people were able to recover every byte—programs, data, configurations, everything I needed. As a result, it took me less time than expected to get back up and running, and as a result, this issue of Freelance Traveller is published on time, and not delayed as I had originally expected.
For those of you who have a Micro Center nearby, I heartily recommend them for ‘tech rescue’; they listened to what I told them of the events that transpired, and they gave me a fair evaluation of the likelihood that they would be able to help me. They didn’t ‘talk down’ to me, and they gave fair evaluations of all the possibilities for repair vs. replacement, including an honest appraisal of what parts would need to be replaced, and the likely lifetime of the rehabilitated computer.
To Freddy Tamarazzo and the rest of his team at Micro Center in Yonkers, NY, thank you.
