From the Editor
Slowly, but surely, I’m getting back on track. This issue is only two weeks “late”, instead of last issue’s three and the four of the issue before. That suggests that maybe next issue will be on-time. Provided that life doesn’t take it into its notional head to … no, I won’t say it and jinx myself.
This is the first issue of the seventeenth year of publication of Freelance Traveller. I will admit, I never expected it to last this long – but the community exceeded my expectations of support. More, I’ve received email thanking me for specific articles (which I’ve always forwarded to the author if I have a current email address) and describing how it fit into (and possibly improved) a session or a campaign. That is why I created Freelance Traveller originally: it was intended to be a community resource for Traveller, not an ego trip for me. It’s also been a learning experience, for all sorts of topics relating to publishing, from being an Editor (as opposed to a mere copy-editor) to being a web page designer (still not one of my strong suits) to being a curator of a collection (of articles) to learning about fonts and page layout to…
You don’t need an organized antinet like Timothy Collinson has created; if you see/read something that you think might have a place in a Traveller article, just scribble yourself a note. Put something together that you find interesting or useful, and send it. I’m always willing to work with you and discuss ways that I think a submission can be improved, or perhaps taken in a different direction. Just because you think you “can’t write” doesn’t actually mean you can’t – and the only way to go from “can’t write” to “can write” … is to write. Finding others who are willing to critique your writing and help you write better is a bonus, but the key is to write. Start with what you know and what interests you, and see how you can apply it to Traveller, then move on to what you don’t know but which interests you, and do some research, and then write. Post drafts to a Traveller forum or mailing list and ask for comment and advice. But above all, write – whether story, background “fluff”, adventure, house rule, whatever – and we’ll work from there.
