Overview
The Medical Scout is the workhorse of the former IISS' Medical Liason Section, a division of the Contact and Liason Office established to provide instruction for the latest medical care and treatment to medics located backwater worlds along the Imperium's periphery. The MLS charter, established in 708, charges the section with the duty of promoting "the spread of medical knowledge, the support of local medical authorities, and the treatment of the sick throughout Imperial and Non-Imperial space." After the Collapse, the Regency folded local MLS cadres into the purview of the Regency Quarantine Services' Office of Relief and Welfare. After the Rape of Trin, nearly a hundred of these ships were involved in relief and recovery for that world.
The ship is a straight sided, prismatic slab. Internally the ship is largely given over to its primary function. The pinnace is located in a ventral docking ring that opens directly into the two sickbay's triage and surgical bays to forward. The pinnace docks with its nose pointing towards the scouts aft section, easing offloading of wounded and sick passengers. The gravely wounded and sick are usually transferred by a lift to the emergency low berths in a compartment directly overhead the docking ring: here as many as forty sentients can be frozen for as long as the trip to a better equipped dirtside facility takes. The medical crew quarters are intermixed among the medical facilities; in an emergency these can be converted into additional sickrooms.
A single double laser barbette is the only protuberance that breaks her otherwise clean lines. Though not intended to operate in frontline combat areas, the class is equipped with fiber optic computers to protect against radiation, electromagnetic interference and solar flares. Some versions add an additional computer and a teaching theater for medical instruction; other more illicit versions are fitted with labs and production facilities that produce drugs or biological implants for illegal sale. Several of the latter have been produced by Vargr Pack elements from Kurgilash Scouts captured from areas of the Imperium overrun by Vargr forces during the Civil War, often providing both illicit narcotics and bootleg pharmaceuticals smuggled into the Regency from the Vargr Splinters and former Extents.
The Kurgilash is named after a Hippocratic-like figure of Vilani history, and vessels are generally named after famed doctors and medics.
